WINSTED, CT — The Penguin Post has learned that Highland Lake will be the site for the sixth annual Penguin Plunge, organized by Special Olympics Connecticut, Saturday, Jan. 30, at noon.

For those keeping score, this is the first year that the plunge will be held in January, as opposed to the first week of February. That means the chill in the air may feel just a bit colder as Winsted-area maniacs descend upon the frozen lake to jump into the icy waters and raise money for the Special Olympics.

As always, registration starts at 9:30 a.m. for the event, which raises tens of thousands of dollars each year to support special Olympians. Those brave enough to jump into the freezing water are encouraged to raise donations in support of the event. The state boat launch is the staging area, with heated tents available for changing and defrosting after the icy dip.
