Penguin Paradise

Achieve Charter School kindergartners in Paradise, California showed off their penguins Thursday afternoon during their annual “Penguin Paradise,” the culmination of a month-long research project.

Kindergarten teacher Aimee Wright said the students have been learning about different animal species. To take their curriculum a step further, they study the 17 different penguin species, she said. Penguin species really vary, Wright said. They have different habitats – for example, some live in snowy climate and other live in grasslands, she explained.

Each student made a portfolio containing all of the information they gathered on penguins. The penguin projects were created at home with the help of their parents once they chose a specific species.

Some brought in sculptures, others brought Paper Mache, and one girl brought a penguin piñata.

Wright said the first kindergarten class she taught at Achieve is now the fourth grade class. Each class was invited to come in and see the projects.

“It’s neat to see other classes supporting them,” she said.
