Happy Feet Getting Happier By The Day

The Penguin Post is glad to report that Happy Feet is recovering nicely and might soon be moved to a saltwater pool ahead of a return to the wild. The first emperor penguin to make the journey of more than 3,000 kilometres in 40 years when he landed in June on New Zealand’s lower North Island was eating up to 2 kilograms of salmon each day at his temporary home at Wellington Zoo. The penguin has been putting on weight after operations to remove sand and other material from his stomach and now weighs 23 kilograms. ‘He’s getting stronger and stronger every day,’ zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker was quoted as saying. ‘Actually, when the vet grabs him for medication or something, he’s fighting a lot more,’ she said. ‘He’s really looking good.’ The emperor is the largest of all penguins and is found around the entire coastline of Antarctica but seldom ventures further north of that.
