Could the Coast Be Clear For NZ Penguins

The Penguin Post has learned that there’s hope that the coast may be clearer for New Zealand’s Little Blue penguins in the Bay of Plenty near the recent Rena oil spill, with just one oiled penguin found overnight. The little blue penguin was picked up by a wildlife team at Mount Maunganui. National Oiled Wildlife response team coordinator Heather McConnell says night patrols went out last night to check penguin burrows. She says they checked 65 little blue penguins, and collected only one oiled bird. However, she says some oiling has been found on Leisure Island, which could affect the penguin population there. Shoreline clean-up teams are following up on it today.
